Fort Pond Bay is Montauk's quiet coast. It held the hamlet's original fishing village, settled in the 1880s by Nova Scotian and Scandinavian families on railroad land, until the 1938 hurricane drove the bay through it. The Navy took the site for a torpedo testing station in 1942, and when the war ended the bay mostly went back to the ospreys. Captain Balfour Way climbs the wooded rise above the shore, looking west across the water.

The house went up in 2015: two stories wrapped in mahogany, cedar, and cumaru, hurricane-rated, set behind mature plantings on 1.9 acres with roughly 200 feet of private bay frontage. It is not a spec-house modern. The floors are reclaimed white oak, the beams exposed Douglas fir, and the walls of glass are framed in mahogany.

Fort Pond Bay faces west, which in Montauk is the whole trade: the ocean side gets the surf, the bay side gets the evening light. Navy Beach, the restaurant that built an institution on that fact, is a mile down the shore, and the Montauk LIRR station is a mile inland.
