120 Beebe Pond Road

A two-story house painted pale green with a red roof and a screened porch across the front, on a road that skirts the pond it is named for. The listing calls it turn of the century and the details table's figure is 1900, a round number that usually means the true year was never written down. What survives inside is legible in the photographs: original hardwood floors, restored moldings, pocket doors, and ceilings with the beams left exposed. The unglamorous work is done too, a solar setup, blown-in wall insulation, a new fuel tank, and new electrical and lighting in the room set up as an office.

Behind the house, a red-sided cabin sits at the edge of the water with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a sleeping loft of built-in woodwork. It has a new roof, new bedroom flooring, electric baseboards, a new hot water heater and septic pump, and new deck stairs to a private dock. The pond is Beebe Pond, an old enough fixture of Canaan that the county historian keeps a postcard of it. In winter it freezes for skating.

The parcel is 12.5 acres on the details table and 14 in the description, with established gardens, mature woods, a natural spring and two streams. Five minutes north is Queechy Lake, the Mahican Quis-sich-kook, called Whiting's Pond until the town renamed it for Susan Warner's 1852 novel, by the historical society's account, and raised by a dam on the Stony Kill sometime before 1910. Canaan itself was settled from Canaan, Connecticut in 1759, and the Berkshires and Tanglewood are just over the state line.
