1279 Lancashire Drive

Eichler Homes came to Concord late. Between 1963 and 1964 the company laid out Parkwood, a tract of about 68 houses beside Concord Community Park, its third and final subdivision in the city and one of the last it completed anywhere. The designs came from Claude Oakland and Associates, the San Francisco office that carried Eichler's atrium plans through the company's closing years; Oakland's drawings for these houses are preserved in the Environmental Design Archives at UC Berkeley.

1279 Lancashire Drive is a 1964 atrium model, post-and-beam, with the open-air courtyard at the center of the plan and the rooms facing it through walls of glass. Mahogany paneling and the original tongue-and-groove ceilings run overhead. Four bedrooms and two baths sit within 1,995 square feet, on a quarter-acre lot.

The current owners have worked on the house for 13 years. The kitchen and baths carry custom Sequoia bamboo cabinetry, Fireclay tile, and Hansgrohe fixtures; the roof and electrical are new, and owned solar has held the electric bill at net zero. Behind the glass, the quarter acre runs to a pool with a Baja shelf, a pergola, raised vegetable beds, a dog run, fruit trees, and a shed built to match the house.
