130 Cedar Drive

The house at 130 Cedar Drive was built in 1991, in the town of Rochester, Ulster County, on the western shoulder of the Shawangunk ridge. What stands there now is not what was framed then. The volumes have been reclad in board-and-batten and painted black, the windows enlarged and squared, the roofline broken into gables that read as three buildings rather than one.

The main residence runs across three levels. White oak runs through the principal rooms. A double-sided fireplace divides the living space from what sits behind it, and the kitchen is built around a Wolf range and a Sub-Zero.

The bedroom count reads oddly on paper because the plan carries two primary suites. One is on the main level, alongside two further bedrooms and a dedicated office. The second is upstairs and runs past 1,100 square feet on its own, with a pitched ceiling, a fireplace, a laundry and a bath.

The lower level walks out. It holds a family room, a full wet bar, wine storage, a media room, gym space, a laundry, a bath and a wood-burning fireplace added in the current work.

Beside the main house is a guest cottage: two bedrooms, one bath, its own laundry, and a finished loft above, which is what carries the count to seven sleeping rooms across the property. It has already been run as a short-term rental. A three-bay barn in the same black cladding closes the third side of the yard, climate controlled and wired for a car.

Between them sits a heated saltwater pool inside a split-rail fence, a cedar-clad hot tub, a fire pit and open lawn to the treeline. The drive to the George Washington Bridge is ninety miles.
