The house
The living room, kitchen and primary bedroom are on the second floor, and the ocean is visible from the living room, the primary bedroom and the wraparound deck. The house is a cedar pole home built in 1990 on 2.6 acres, set back from Kauhikoa Road behind two banyan trees.
Wood-lined vaulted ceilings and heavy beams run through the main rooms, and a round pole stands beside the kitchen bar. A black wood stove sits on a round hearth in the middle of the living room. The hardwood floors were refinished in 2024. The kitchen has a range with six burners, a gray shiplap island and a bar topped with a slab that keeps its live edge. A stair at the back of the kitchen goes up to a loft above the living areas.
Bedrooms and baths
The house has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, both renovated with limestone floors and quartzite counters. The primary bath has a steam shower with two overhead rain showerheads. Upstairs is reached by stairs or an exterior lift. Below, a two-car garage holds a bonus room that the listing says can serve as a fourth bedroom, an office or a studio, and one of its doors is carved with a leaf.
The land
The 2.6 acres run down to a gulch. The pool is in-ground and solar heated, with a hot tub beside it. The grounds also hold a covered outdoor dining and barbecue area, an outdoor fireplace, an outdoor shower tiled in teal, and a lawn with a gazebo whose back wall is green bamboo. The solar electric system has a battery that was recently replaced.
Kauhikoa is an old Haiku land division, and the word turns up in a Hawaiian proverb as the name of a lazy man: Kauhikoa has no work.
