Shekomeko began as a Mahican village, and in 1740 a twenty-two-year-old Moravian missionary named Christian Henry Rauch founded a mission there; by August 1742 it held the first Christian congregation of Native Americans in what is now the United States, and a monument minutes from this property still marks the site.
