The Story
Shekomeko began as a Mahican village, and in 1740 a twenty-two-year-old Moravian missionary named Christian Henry Rauch founded a mission there; by August 1742 it held the first Christian congregation of Native Americans in what is now the United States, and a monument minutes from this property still marks the site.
The house is a 1988 contemporary set privately on 32 acres of the hamlet’s open hill country, at the end of a long drive that winds up through the land. Stissing Mountain — an isolated block of Precambrian bedrock topped by a 1930s fire tower, with the Thompson Pond kettle bog at its foot — stands in view from nearly every room.
The House and Land
Vaulted ceilings and expansive windows hold southern, western, and northern exposures; a wood stove anchors the living space, and a large porch, an outdoor shower, and an attached two-car garage round out the house at a comfortable 2,250 square feet.
The acreage is the deeper opportunity: meadow and view land that could site a larger main residence later, with this house kept as the guest quarters. Mashomack’s roughly two-thousand-acre preserve and polo club is minutes away, with Pine Plains and Millerton ten minutes off and Millbrook twenty.
