159 Bond Street

For years the house at 159 Bond Street carried an 1899 build date. The Landmarks designation report that brought this block into the Boerum Hill Historic District in 2018 puts it nearly half a century earlier, at about 1854, when William Lynch, an Irish-born carpenter, built it with his son John as the first house on its block. The neighborhood was still called North Gowanus then, and the canal that would take the name was being dug nearby. The report singles out the wrought-iron fretwork of the stoop railing, still in place a hundred and seventy years later.

In the summer of 2026 the house came back to market rebuilt top to bottom, five finished levels and five bedrooms across 3,740 square feet, and found its buyer in fourteen days. Last asking $5,995,000.

An arched entry hall behind the black front door opens to the parlor, where a pair of tall black-framed windows faces the street. The kitchen runs in pale sage with a fluted marble island at its center, a farmhouse sink under the window, and a glass door to the terrace, with the garden below; a powder room off the hall is papered in gray dandelions.

The primary bath is done as a full marble wet room with a freestanding tub behind the glass. Bedrooms climb through the upper floors under the block’s treetops, one floor styled as a nursery beside a playroom hung with bright canvases; at the garden level a family room opens through glass to a yard where a stone path curves the full length of the planting, and the cellar is finished as a rec room.
