159 East 61st Street
East 61st Street between Lexington and Third reads as a single block today, but it began as a set. Around 1872, three identical Italianate brownstones went up at 157, 159, and 161, their fronts faced in brownstone and finished with bracketed cornices in the manner of the period. The broker record and StreetEasy both date 159 to 1899; the archival trail places it circa 1872, two and a half decades earlier, and that earlier date is the one the evidence supports. What the house did with its first decades was ordinary work. From 1894 it ran for years as a high-end boarding house, one of many on the East Side absorbing a city that kept arriving.

The private chapter began in 1920, when the banker Rudolph Kissel bought the house. His stepdaughter Barbara married Jarvis Cromwell, who ran the Iselin-Jefferson Financial Corporation, and the couple raised three children behind the brownstone front. The building stayed a single family's address through that long middle stretch. The most consequential change came in 2007, a gut renovation that kept the original cornice and the front doors and reworked nearly everything else. The new face carries a rusticated base, quoined surrounds around the windows, and a brick veneer over the older frame, so the house presents two eras at once: the cornice it was born with and the skin it was given.

Inside is a six-floor single-family townhouse, 21 feet wide and 7,500 square feet, with six bedrooms and seven-plus baths arranged around a grand central staircase and served by an elevator. There are gas and wood fireplaces, a garden at the back, and a terrace above, the rooms held in mint condition after the full renovation. It is listed at 14,900,000 by the Deborah Grubman Team at Corcoran, on the market 449 days through several price cuts. Strip away the asking number and what remains is a house that has been a boarding house, a banker's home, and now a rebuilt mansion, still the width it was in 1872.
