The front of the house faces west onto Avenue A, and the rear terrace faces east over the neighboring gardens. Anton van Dalen lived and worked here from 1971, and the word PEACE runs in black letters across the white band above the ground floor.

It is a four-story brick house, 20 feet wide and 76 feet deep by the floor plan, dated 1900 in the city's property records. The garden floor holds a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, three bedrooms and an office. One flight up the listing places a full-floor loft with brick walls and painted beams. The third and fourth floors make a duplex: a library and kitchen opening to an 18-by-34-foot terrace, and above them van Dalen's studio, 18 feet 7 inches by 26 feet 1 inch, under a skylight with a ceiling of 10 feet 10 inches. A painted stair goes on to a roof of 18 by 40 feet.

Tompkins Square Park is half a block south. From the upper floors the view runs over the street trees to a red-brick church tower.
