The house
This is an 1838 cedar-shingled farmhouse on one acre in Springs, with a blue Dutch door and a separate studio across the yard. Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner found it in 1953 for their friend, the painter Nicolas Carone.
The living room is built around the original fireplace and its bread oven, under hand-hewn beams and over wide-plank floors. The dining room keeps its exposed posts and timber framing, with paired windows onto the garden. The first-floor primary suite has French doors to the lawn, and two more bedrooms are upstairs, one with a window nook. The kitchen and baths have been renovated in keeping with the house, which has three bedrooms and three and a half baths in about 1,400 square feet.
The studio and the grounds
The studio has its original herringbone brick floor, a skylight and cedar walls. Outside are a bluestone patio, a shaded dining terrace, a level lawn, mature trees and an outdoor shower, with a one-car garage and workshop beside them. The listing says that in fall and winter the house looks through to Three Mile Harbor, and the bay beaches, marinas and waterfront dining are minutes away.
The record
Behind the Hedges reported in 2022 that Carone moved in with his wife, Adele Bishop, in 1954 and painted in the studio until 1964. Bishop ran the stenciling firm Lord and Bishop, and the listing says she stenciled the walls and the stairs. Willem de Kooning rented the house after Carone.
Recent work, per the listing, includes a new cedar roof, central air, a new well and septic system, and updated electric.
