2 Stonecreek Road

Stonecreek is the opening move in a 150-acre project in Woodstock assembled by Melissa Meyer, a developer who describes her own approach as conservation driven. The land is coming out slowly, as a small number of one-off houses on parcels running from six to twenty-two acres, each drawn to its own site rather than to a pattern book. This one takes 8.3 of those acres, with 101 acres of protected conservation land around it, five minutes from Tinker Street and roughly ninety minutes from the George Washington Bridge. Ashokan Architecture, the Kingston practice Brad Will founded after taking his architecture degree at Cornell in 1984, is credited with the design. Megan Oldenburger of Dichotomy Interiors, working out of Woodstock, ran the interiors.

The form is plain and deliberate. Two shed-roofed volumes pitch away from one another and meet at a low glazed link, clad in fine vertical siding under black metal roofing and fascia. Weathershield windows run the full height of the great room, oversized sliding panels open the long south wall, and a four-and-a-half-foot glass pivot door handles the entry. Inside, the ceiling climbs to sixteen feet in white oak carried on exposed beams, and a black steel wood-burning fireplace hangs free from that ceiling instead of sitting in a wall. Lime plaster covers the walls, large-format stone runs underfoot, and because the glass faces south the light moves across the plaster all day.

Woodstock has been a craft town since 1902, when Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead and Jane Byrd McCall Whitehead bought seven farms on the slope of Mount Guardian and built Byrdcliffe, an Arts and Crafts colony of roughly thirty buildings that made furniture its signature. The Woodstock Artists Association and Museum opened at 28 Tinker Street in 1919 and has not moved since. Stonecreek argues in that line rather than against it. The kitchen is white oak millwork by Rexhill Studio, set under Taj Mahal quartzite that runs the length of a twelve-foot island, up the backsplash, and into a sculptural hood, with a Wolf range beneath it. Everything is grain and stone and shadow gaps. There is almost no applied detail anywhere in the house.

Four bedrooms and three and a half baths sit in roughly 2,800 square feet, arranged so that bedrooms open straight onto the terrace. Outside there is more than 2,000 square feet of that terrace, laid in large-format stone with weathering steel edging, wrapped around a heated gunite pool with the pines standing directly behind it. The house trades turnkey in the fullest sense of the word: furniture, rugs, lighting, decor, window treatments, bedding, the outdoor furniture and the cookware in the drawers all convey. A buyer arrives with a suitcase and nothing else.
