Penthouse A sits at the top of a co-op that went up in 1929 on East 69th Street, eleven stories holding seventy two apartments. It is a Lenox Hill building that does carry a name, the Tower House, but the count is the argument: a full-time doorman, a live-in super, an elevator, laundry and storage in the building, a gym, a garden. Five of the seventy two are listed for sale at the moment, so a buyer reading this one is reading it against four neighbors.

Seven rooms, two bedrooms, two baths, and no square footage published. The foyer is the room the listing leads with, and the reason is overhead. A skylight floods it with daylight, which is what lets the foyer read as a room and not a corridor. There is a wood burning fireplace. Hardwood runs through, there is central air and a dishwasher, and the washer and dryer are in the apartment, with the building's laundry downstairs as well. There is a terrace, and what it looks at is city and skyline.

Corcoran listed the apartment in September of 2013 and had it in contract by that October. By the end of December it was off the market. It traded ten months after that, in October of 2014, at exactly the number it had carried the whole way through. Nothing has been asked of it since. This is the first time in twelve years the door has been open to anyone who does not already live behind it.

Cats and dogs are allowed, and so is a pied a terre. The taxes are inside the maintenance rather than billed alongside it. The Q at 72nd Street is under five hundred feet from the door. The 6 at 68th Street and Hunter College is a seventh of a mile, the F and the Q at Lexington and 63rd a third of a mile, and the trains at Lexington Avenue and 59th Street sit under half a mile off.
