2079 Old Hillsboro Road

The Franklin Hillsboro Turnpike Company took its charter on March 15, 1880, and for the next forty four years the road past this gate was private property. A tollgate stood on Old Hillsboro Road north of the village, and the rates were fixed by law: 25 cents for a loaded wagon or an automobile, 10 cents for a one horse buggy. In 1924 the company surrendered the charter and sold the roadbed to Williamson County, and the county lifted the last of its gates in January 1929. County record dates the farmhouse here to 1930, the season after the road became public. The village that gave the road its name had by then been Leiper's Fork for a century; the post office took the new name in 1818 because Coffee County had already claimed Hillsboro. Twenty and nine tenths acres carry a four stall barn with a hayloft, fenced and cross fenced paddocks, and frontage on the Harpeth. The road is free to use now. The only gate left is the one at the drive.
