210 Bate Road

210 Bate Road sits on 4.72 acres in the Town of Claverack, in the hamlet of Craryville, about ten minutes east of Warren Street in Hudson. The listing dates the house to 1740 and credits Dutch settlers, and while round colonial dates always deserve a squint (the county assessor says 1800), the frame makes the case for real age: hand-hewn beams, wide-plank floors, and weathered brick.

By the listing's account, later owners folded in salvage from a grand Federal house nearby, so mantels, cupboards, doors, windows, and the staircase from one century sit inside the timber frame of another. The interiors read as two eras of Columbia County building in a single envelope, collected over generations rather than restored all at once.

The listing places the painter Stanley Bate here at the turn of the twentieth century. The record says otherwise, and the record is better. Bate was born in Nashville in 1903, studied at the Art Students League in New York, and spent 1927 to 1929 as an art editor for Encyclopedia Britannica. In the early 1940s he and his wife, Emilie Rossel, bought a barn in Craryville that had no electricity or plumbing, then made it their life: a gallery downstairs, a studio and living quarters above.

He showed at Knoedler and Company, Kennedy Galleries, and Rose Fried Gallery, worked early in enamel on copper, and stayed in Craryville until his death in August 1972. The Albany Institute of History and Art mounted a retrospective the following year, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum lists him with Craryville as his place. His gas-fired kiln still stands in the two-story carriage barn on the road that carries his name.

The house holds 2,400 square feet in eight rooms: two bedrooms upstairs sharing a Jack and Jill bath, a second full bath on the main floor, an office, and an artist's studio that rises into vaulted ceilings and exposed timber framing. A wood-burning fireplace anchors the living room and two wood stoves carry the cold months, one in the entrance hall and one in the primary bedroom. The kitchen and baths are renovated without theatrics, and the whole property, house and barn together, runs on solar with two Tesla Powerwall batteries.

Outside, Loomis Creek crosses the land under a pair of footbridges, woodland trails run beneath mature canopy, and a fenced garden rings the house, with open meadow left over for a pool or a pond. The last thing to see is the kiln, still in the barn where Bate left it in 1972.
