The Story
The house is a one-story Craftsman with a wide front porch, two bedrooms, and a living and dining room that share a wall of white shelving. At the back, across a garden, the former garage is a 440-square-foot studio under open white rafters.
Marathon Street was laid out in December 1886 as the Marathon tract, west of Alvarado Street. The main owner was Solomon Hubbard, and the developers included August Julius Stamm, a German-born pianist and conductor who had come to Los Angeles the year before as organist at St. Vibiana's. The first two streets of the tract were Hubbard and Fanning, now Coronado Terrace and Benton Way. The house came later; the listing dates it to 1911, and its roof still has exposed rafter tails, knee brackets and a dormer with louvered side panels.
Inside
The porch is covered, with a tongue-and-groove ceiling, a stained wood floor and a swing on chains. The front door opens onto hardwood floors and plaster walls. The living room has a white-painted brick fireplace, which the listing calls decorative, and box beams over the opening to the dining area; the living and dining rooms are each 16 feet 7 inches wide on the floor plan. A wall of shelves wraps the dining table, with a doorway cut through it to the kitchen.
The kitchen has sage-green cabinets, black stone counters, white subway tile and a gas range. Two bedrooms share a central bath, which has a tub and a black hexagon-tile floor; the listing adds a mudroom with laundry at the back. Central heat and air, an unfinished attic and a partial basement are in the listing.
The garden and the studio
The mudroom opens onto a deck of about 30 by 12 feet, then a garden of stepping stones, a citrus tree and slatted green metal furniture. The studio at the back is 23 feet 11 inches by 18 feet 4 inches, with a concrete floor and open roof framing, and its doors open to the garden. The listing suggests work, creative projects or a potential ADU, and notes city-light views on clear nights.
The lot is 40 by 74 feet, with a driveway for one car. Sunset Boulevard is a short walk, and Echo Park Lake and the Silver Lake Reservoir are both nearby.
