Germantown began as East Camp, the largest single migration of the American colonial era. In the fall of 1710 some 1,200 Palatine refugees landed on the east bank of the Hudson to make pitch and tar for the Royal Navy on land bought from Robert Livingston. The naval stores scheme collapsed within a few years, but the families stayed, and their names still hang on the road signs. Among them were the Rockefellers: Diell Rockefeller, great-great-great-grandfather of John D., settled here in 1733, and the family's fieldstone homestead of 1755 still stands on the same county road that becomes Main Street. On Main Street itself, George Rockefeller raised the Central House hotel in 1876, and the Barringer Overbaugh Lasher House at number 321, begun around 1800, holds a place on the National Register.
