243 Kane Street

The listing copy describes a house built in 1901. The city's own records tell a better story. The Landmarks Preservation Commission's building database and the tax roll both date 243 Kane Street to around 1845, which makes the house roughly half a century older than marketed and places it in Cobble Hill's first wave of rowhouse construction, the Greek Revival years when these blocks were first built out.

The date is not an outlier. Landmarks records show 245, 247, and 249 Kane all rising around 1845, with 233 and 235 dated around 1842 and 227 through 231 following in 1856. The north side of Kane between Clinton and Court reads as a coherent mid-nineteenth-century blockfront, and this house sits inside that sequence, part of the fabric the city moved to protect when it designated the district.

The house is older than its own address. The street was born Butler Street, became Harrison Street, and was renamed in 1928 for James Kane, a local alderman and police sergeant. Number 243 has stood through all three names.

The number that matters here is 24. The house holds a 24-foot frontage on a lot that runs 24 by just under 100 feet, with the building itself 24 by 40. Against the standard 20-foot rowhouse, those four extra feet change everything downstream: where the stair can sit, how wide the rooms breathe, how far the light reaches into a mid-nineteenth-century plan.

The listing counts five decorative fireplaces across five bedrooms and describes eleven-foot ceilings on the parlor floor. The fireplace claim has a paper trail: a 2014 rental listing for the house noted marble mantels throughout, the kind of original material that tends to survive in houses this age on blocks this protected.

Directly across the street stands the Kane Street Synagogue, home of Congregation Baith Israel, known as the Mother Synagogue of Brooklyn and the borough's oldest congregation still serving the neighborhood where it was founded. The building went up in 1855 as the Middle Reformed Protestant Dutch Church, and the congregation bought it in 1905. Aaron Copland had his bar mitzvah there in 1913, while his father served as congregation president, and it was the synagogue's own rabbi, Israel Goldfarb, himself a liturgical composer, who helped persuade the elder Copland to let his son study music in Paris.

Cobble Hill was designated a historic district on December 20, 1969, among the first in New York City, extended in 1988 and listed on the National Register in 1976 with 796 contributing buildings. What designation froze in place is exactly what this blockfront shows: an intact run of houses from the early 1840s through the mid-1850s, still holding their line a century and a half on.

The name goes back further still. A 1767 survey marked a conical hill here as Cobbleshill, and during the Battle of Brooklyn it carried Cobble Hill Fort, Washington's lookout over the harbor. Jennie Jerome, Winston Churchill's mother, was born a few blocks away on Amity Street. It is a small neighborhood with a long memory, and this house has been part of it for most of that run.
