Harry Gesner never trained as an architect. Born in Oxnard in 1925, he landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day, sat in on Frank Lloyd Wright's lectures at Yale on the G.I. Bill, and declined to formalize any of it, famously sketching Malibu's Wave House with a grease pencil while floating on his surfboard off the rocks. In 1975 he designed this house inside the gates of Malibu Cove Colony, recorded in his archive as the Bernstein House, for the family that has held it ever since.

It has never traded. Five decades after completion it comes to market for the first time, and the co-listing agent is Zen Gesner, the architect's son, who is said to have recognized his father's design the moment he stepped inside. He knows the catalog: the family's own Sandcastle sold in early 2024, and the Wave House, which Zen co-listed, brought $29.5 million later that year. The Bernstein House is the next Gesner to change hands.

The approach sets the tone, a wooden bridge wrapped in nautical rope leading to tall bronze doors Gesner salvaged from the old San Francisco Mint. Stained glass rescued from a historic church filters light into rooms of expressive woodwork, and the sunken living room sits under beamed ceilings around a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace, one of five in the house. The kitchen keeps its hand-tiled counters, butcher-block island, and double Thermador ovens, facing the water.

Four bedrooms and four and a half baths run across two stories and 2,644 square feet, virtually untouched since completion. The primary suite holds an arched fireplace finished in cobalt blue tile and opens to a curved private balcony over the sand, and walls of glass carry the Pacific through the main rooms to oceanfront decks with direct beach access.

Malibu Cove Colony is an enclave of 51 houses on Escondido Beach in eastern Malibu, one of only two guard-gated communities that sit directly on this stretch of sand. Past the 24-hour gate, a single private drive runs between the highway and the water, and the houses step straight down to the beach. Gesner spent his life a few miles up the coast, and this is one of the last of his beach houses still in original hands.
