The frame
The great room is the full height of the barn: two stories under the roof, crossed by dark timber beams and by two white-railed galleries that meet over the middle of the room. At the gable end a timber truss sits above a wall of divided-light windows, and French doors below them open to the bluestone terrace and the pool. The barn dates to the 1800s, and the renovation that made it a house of 3,100 square feet was finished in 2018.
The floor in the great room is painted white, and on a clear morning the window bars print across it. The fireplace there is a glass-fronted box with a herringbone brick firebox. The second fireplace is in a vaulted bedroom on the ground floor, under a timber mantel, beside a pair of French doors to the lawn.
Inside the frame
The kitchen and the dining room sit under a lower ceiling of beams, on dark wide planks. The counters are marble, the range is a Wolf, the sink is a fireclay apron-front, and the tall cabinets have wire-mesh doors. The dining table is a trestle of reclaimed wood under a glass lantern of bare bulbs. A den beside the great room has a plank ceiling between its beams.
Upstairs the bedrooms are vaulted, each with a single dark beam left across the slope. One bath has a stained plank ceiling over white shiplap; another is white subway tile with a marble console on chrome legs and two pivoting mirrors. The powder room sink is a white bowl on a rough timber slab.
Outside
The walls are cedar, painted near-black, and the roof is cedar shingle with a cupola at the ridge. Barn doors slide across the back wall beside the French doors, and both chimneys are painted white. The pool is gunite, heated and saltwater, set in the lawn below a terrace of bluestone and fieldstone walls, with boxwood globes and fountain grass along its edge.
