The house
285 20th Street is a one-story brick house on a lot 36 feet wide, entered through a private landscaped courtyard. It has 2,280 square feet, two bedrooms and two baths, with skylights and exposed wood beams overhead. Hardwood floors run beneath the beams, and storage is built in throughout. All 2,280 square feet are on one level, with the skylights and beams across the main rooms.
The kitchen has poured concrete floors, white cabinetry, a vintage Chambers stove, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a farmhouse sink, and a wall of windows looks onto the front garden. The living room is centered on a wood-burning fireplace framed by custom white oak built-ins. The listing calls the plan loft-inspired and says the house has abundant natural light and indoor-outdoor living.
The gardens
The lot holds two gardens. The side garden covers about 750 square feet and has a fountain and raised planting beds. Both bedrooms look onto the rear garden.
The primary bedroom has its own bath and a cedar-lined walk-in closet. A private two-car garage stands on the property. The listing describes the house as standalone, with the privacy that implies, near the restaurants, cafes and shops of South Slope and its transportation.
The record
City records date the house to 1931 and list it as a single story of brick on a 4,375 square foot lot in Greenwood, Brooklyn.
Heat is both radiant and forced air, with central air conditioning, and the house has its own laundry. The listing notes potential for further expansion, subject to approvals.
