The frame

The house is brick, 25 feet wide and three stories, built in 1829 as a carriage house. The front is red brick with stone lintels and sills and a black steel lintel over three carriage doors, and the ground floor behind it has fourteen-foot ceilings, polished concrete floors and transom windows.

Inside, the second floor is held up by timber joists with boards laid between them, left exposed over wide-plank hardwood. Some of the original joists needed replacing and were reused as shelving; the others are still in place. An open staircase in black steel climbs under skylights to the top floor, past a primary suite whose wall of glass looks onto it.
