29 Morey Road
$1,495,000Photography: Michael Bowman
The card the Sharon assessor keeps for map 3, lot 6 is short. Year built 1966. Style, Modern/Contemp. One story, wood on sheathing, a gable roof under asphalt shingle, hardwood floors, 2,106 square feet of living area on 1.55 acres zoned rural residence. No architect is recorded and nothing in the town's file names one. The house carries the hallmarks of the modernism that reached the Litchfield Hills after Marcel Breuer's first Stillman house went up in Litchfield in 1951, a glazed gable, a masonry chimney mass, a low pitch and a deep overhang, and it is written up here as the record supports it: a 1966 modernist.

The sale chain does the rest of the talking. The house changed hands in September 2007 and again in December 2013, when the listing described a dramatic entry with a stone floor opening to a vaulted living and dining room with a centered fireplace flanked by windows, which is still the plan. A foreclosure followed in 2018, and in January 2019 the house was offered as-is, with no heating system. The buyers closed that February and rebuilt it. When the town revalued in 2024, the improvements on the card had risen by a third over the 2022 figure, and the bath count had gone from the one and a half a 2011 rental listing recorded to three.

A black-painted gable pavilion glazed to the ridge on both sides of a brick chimney, with a low wing holding the entry, the bedrooms and a two-car garage. Inside the pavilion, one vaulted room takes the living area, the dining table and the kitchen. A main-level primary with a walk-in closet and a skylit bath, a guest room with its own bath, a third bedroom on the hall bath and a den complete the eight rooms the card counts. Forced hot air on propane, central air and a whole-house generator are the systems the rebuild put in. It comes to market for the first time since.
