298 Harbor Road

Ward Bulkley, a sea captain, built at 298 Harbor Road in 1834, in the harbour village of Southport. Generations added to the house afterward, in the way that houses of that age accumulate, until the additions no longer spoke to one another.

The architect JP Franzen and Moore House Design spent years on the reconciliation, and the work was recently published in Architectural Digest. Original pine floors were preserved, millwork was extended rather than replaced, and Venetian plaster, reclaimed stone and artisan finishes were introduced where the record had been lost.

The kitchen is vaulted and organised around an eleven foot island, the clearest instance of the old structure and modern use arriving at the same answer. Behind the wood panelled staircase, a hidden speakeasy.

Five bedrooms, five full baths and two half baths, with the unusual flexibility of a primary suite on either the first or second floor. The lot runs eight tenths of an acre with seasonal water views, a pool and spa, and an outdoor sauna.
