The Story

The building at 339 Warren Street rose in 1897, a three story brick commercial block on the south side of Hudson's main street, in the historic district that now covers the length of Warren Street. Its name comes from the stained glass transom that still spans the storefront and reads The Leader; the sign has outlasted the shop it named, and no record surfaced in our research of who The Leader was. What is documented is the storefront's recent run, which tracks the arc of modern Warren Street almost exactly. Hawkins New York, the home goods brand founded in Hudson in 2013, ran its flagship from this address through the mid 2010s, its windows winning a Best Pink Christmas award at the 2014 Winter Walk. Since September 2024 the ground floor has belonged to Freaks', the vintage and antiques shop run by Kenzi Wilbur, a former media editor who grew up the granddaughter of an antiques dealer.

The current owners renovated the whole property in 2017, keeping the original brick walls and hand hewn timbers exposed, trimming rooms in salvaged historic lumber, and adding Pella windows, on demand boilers, and air conditioning underneath the old surfaces. The result is one envelope holding three lives: a working shop, a townhouse, and an alley house.

The Building

The storefront runs about 2,000 square feet behind its original plate glass, with pressed tin ceilings, plaster walls, skylights, and the transom overhead; Freaks' holds it on a lease. The owner's duplex takes the second and third floors: four bedrooms, each with an en suite bath, an open plan living floor under high ceilings, three gas fireplaces, and a kitchen with marble counters, a Viking range, and a wood fired pizza oven. The third floor is given over to the primary suite, with its own fireplace, soaking tub, and walk in closet, and a covered rear porch looks over Union Street rooftops toward the Catskills. A residential elevator connects the floors.

Behind the house on Cherry Alley, the original brick carriage house has been rebuilt as a one bedroom loft, its galley kitchen lit by a large skylight and its upstairs suite carrying a gas fireplace and soaking tub of its own; the owners run it as a short term rental. All told the property holds five bedrooms, six full and two half baths, and 6,539 square feet on a 3,049 square foot lot, the carriage house joined to the main building by a run of deck walkways, a quiet address of its own one roofline off Warren Street.
