The house went up in 1975, a low-slung modern set back on ten wooded acres along Route 9G, minutes from Rhinebeck village. It traded quietly in 2011, and in 2019 came the intervention that defines it: The Art of Building, the design-build firm at 64 East Market Street that mainly considers work on properties with a Rhinebeck address, redesigned the house around an understated palette of warm woods, natural stone, dark architectural accents, and expansive glass.

The name followed the site. The Canopy House is called that for the mature trees that close over the property, and the redesign treats them as the main event, with long runs of glass framing the woods so the light shifts across stone, wood, and slate through the day. The restraint reads almost Japanese, an observation earlier marketing of the house made outright.

The main residence holds 3,364 square feet, five bedrooms, and four baths, most of it on a single level. A double-sided fireplace, one of four on the property, divides the living spaces, and the 2019 rebuild ran to the details: custom black walnut interior doors, radiant heated floors across six zones, an energy-recovery ventilation system, and a chef's kitchen. The primary suite takes a soaking tub, and an electric sauna was added in 2022.

The 10.11 acres carry a second, fully independent residence: an 1,132-square-foot guest house with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a wood-burning stove, and an attached bonus studio that could take a gym or office. A heated 20-by-50 gunite pool sits in a clearing, an attached two-car garage serves the main house, and a generator backs up both residences.

The village of Rhinebeck, with the 1766 Beekman Arms and its restaurant row, is a few minutes away, and Amtrak at Rhinecliff connects the town to Manhattan. Two hundred acres of the old Astor Ferncliff estate survive nearby as Ferncliff Forest, the preserve Brooke Astor deeded to the town in 1964 on the condition it stay wild.
