In 1949, Dr. Leonard Asher and his wife Betty commissioned Rodney Walker, who had trained as a draftsman under Rudolph Schindler and had just produced Case Study Houses 16, 17, and 18 for Arts & Architecture, to build the family a house on a ridge between Mulholland Drive and Beverly Glen. Julius Shulman photographed the finished house that year; twenty of his prints of it now sit in the Betty Asher papers at the Getty Research Institute. Betty Asher went on to thirteen years as a curatorial assistant at LACMA and, from 1979, a decade as co-owner of the Asher/Faure Gallery, and her son Michael became a founding figure of institutional critique. The house carries its record plainly: redwood post and beam glazed to the view, flagstone underfoot, and Walker's movable partitions still turning four bedrooms into five, 3,411 square feet that have been restored rather than revised.
