35 Bethune Street

Pickwick House is the six-story brick loft at 33 through 37 Bethune Street that Gustavus Isaacs put up in 1886 as owner, architect and builder, according to the 1969 Greenwich Village Historic District designation report, which notes the cast-iron columns of the storefront, the simple stone lintels and sills, and the heavy bracketed cornice with a pediment at its center. It was built as a factory and stayed one into the 1940s. The Zurich Silk Finishing Company took the lots in 1909, and from 1926 until 1943 the building was the factory of Charles F. Biele and Sons, showcase makers whose cases went to department stores and museums. A business called Pickwick Papers was a later tenant, and with the 1983 conversion to condominiums the building became Pickwick House, 22 residences today.

5B is one true bedroom with a den, two full baths and about 1,100 square feet. The factory bones are the finish: exposed brick, beamed ceilings, high ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace, with a kitchen in custom cabinetry and high-end appliances in a renovated home.
