353 Haas Hill Road

The hamlet came first, and it kept changing its mind about what to call itself. This corner of the Town of Coxsackie was Guinea Hill, then Lime Rock, until the post office settled on Climax in 1892, and the name has sat along Route 81 in the Catskill foothills ever since. The compound on Haas Hill Road is younger: three structures raised in the late 1940s on 148 acres of gardens, meadow, and forest. It last traded in 2017, and the owners have since renovated all three buildings, from the main house down to the pool cabin.

The main house holds 2,700 of the compound's roughly 4,000 square feet. A double-height living and dining room rises around the original fireplace, and the kitchen pairs a charcoal AGA range with a hand-painted tile backsplash and terracotta floors warmed by radiant heat. Upstairs, the primary suite takes the mountain view, with two more bedrooms beside it. The two-story cottage carries pine floors, a kitchenette, and a full bath; the pool cabin runs to thick wood beams under a vaulted ceiling, with a loft, kitchenette, and bath of its own. Five bedrooms and five baths in all, spread across the three.

The 148 acres roll from a fenced wildflower garden and mature plantings into meadow and forest, with a barn and an in-ground pool set among them. Coxsackie village and its Hudson River waterfront are minutes east, and Hudson and the Albany airport are each about 30 minutes away. The town line reads Coxsackie, but the post office has read Climax since 1892.
