4 Bond Street

The tax card for 4 Bond Street says 1910. The tax assessment ledgers for Ward 15, read for the NoHo Historic District designation report of 1999, say otherwise: the house went up in 1828-29 for Nathaniel Weed, a merchant building on what was then a fashionable New York block. Weed put up No. 6 next door in the same season, David S. Jones built No. 2 on the corner side, and Weed kept a stable directly behind on Great Jones Street, which he replaced in 1844-45 with a Greek Revival townhouse of his own. The Flemish bond brickwork of the facade, headers and stretchers alternating course by course, is the signature of that first construction, laid almost two centuries ago.

Fashion moved uptown and the house adapted. In 1863-64 it was raised from three stories to four for Mrs. C. Deuel, and the crown it received then survives: an elaborate carved wood cornice with brackets, circular ornament, and a central pediment, singled out feature by feature in the designation report. Later the basement and first story were rebuilt as three commercial floors beneath a brick relieving arch, and the house spent the next century working, as a store, a factory, and manufacturing lofts; the 1940 tax photograph shows a boiler dealer's sign over the entrance.

The street held on to its fabric. The block sits inside the NoHo Historic District, designated in 1999, and in 2025 an application before the Landmarks Preservation Commission proposed re-creating the house's stripped brownstone window lintels to match the carved originals next door at No. 2.

The duplex sits at the top of the house, one of just three units behind the door. It is 1,300 square feet with a 21-foot ceiling, south-facing windows running the light deep into the main room, hardwood floors, recessed lighting, central air, a washer and dryer, and two bedrooms with two full baths. A stair leads up to a 900-square-foot private roof deck, with roof rights and the downtown skyline in every direction above the cornice line.
