40 Hellbrook Lane

The stone house at 40 Hellbrook Lane went up around 1750, in the years when Dutch farming families were laying fieldstone walls across the Town of Esopus, a few miles below Kingston. Its second act arrived in 2006, when a Dutch timber-frame barn of the same era was dismantled, reassembled, and joined to the house beneath a standing-seam copper roof, two eighteenth-century structures reading as if they had always shared a wall.

The farm traded in July 2022, and the new owners undertook a full renovation, completed in 2024, that ran from the pool to the landscape plan and every interior, carried out in cedar, stone, and plaster.

Inside the stone house the eighteenth century does the finish work: hand-hewn beamed ceilings, reclaimed wide-plank floors, stone fireplaces, a Rais soapstone woodstove. The kitchen holds a La Cornue range, and low-profile Runtal panels carry the heat. In the attached barn, the great room rises 35 feet through the reassembled post-and-beam frame, oversized French doors on both sides opening the white plaster walls to the meadow.

Five bedrooms and four baths across 4,216 square feet, the primary suite with a fireplace, a copper soaking tub, and a sauna, plus two dedicated offices. It rents fully furnished.

The 51.9 acres run from light woodland to open meadow, stitched with original stone walls, a spring-fed pond, winding creeks, and walking trails. A second post-and-beam barn was remade as the pool house: gym, kitchenette, steam shower, a lofted lounge, and a screened porch with a wood-burning stove for October nights. A working horse barn, a restored greenhouse, and a full solar array round out the outbuildings.

Ulster Park is a hamlet of the Town of Esopus, minutes from Kingston's Rondout waterfront and about two hours from the George Washington Bridge.
