446 State Street

Boerum Hill was built out from the 1840s into the 1870s, and 446 State Street belongs to the front of that run: a detached four-story wood-frame house on a 22-foot lot on State Street between Bond and Nevins, its Greek Revival details still reading from the sidewalk. A door surround with side lights, frieze-band windows tucked under a simple bracketed cornice. The city's 1940 tax photograph shows the same facade, then with wooden shutters, and Brownstoner called it a pre-Civil War Greek Revival wood-frame house when it came to market in 2019.

The listing names the original staircase, a parlor floor fireplace and parquet floors as intact, and Brownstoner's 2019 write-up adds original black marble mantels. The house is arranged as an owner's garden duplex, a floor-through apartment on the third floor and a guest suite on the top floor, and on the garden level a sunroom looks out over a large back yard.

The lot runs 22 by 78 feet, and the yard is bounded on one side by the blank flank of 76 Nevins Street, the house on Nevins Street offered alongside it. The rendered lawn and glass-walled rear elevation in the gallery illustrate that combined scheme, not the house as it stands today. On its own, this is a wood house in a brick and brownstone neighborhood, with the width and the garden to make it one home.
