The Story

The hills east of Cambridge were American chestnut country once. The stands were logged through the nineteenth century, the town historian has traced a water-powered sawmill foundation in the woods nearby, and the blight first found in New York in 1904 killed what the loggers left. When the state replanted in the 1960s it named the result Chestnut Woods State Forest, 802 acres that begin at a pull-off on Chestnut Hill Road itself.

The farmhouse at 448 predates the loss. County records date it to 1835, two decades after White Creek split from Cambridge as its own town, in hill country Quaker families had settled after the Cambridge Patent of 1761. It still stands on its original stone foundation, clapboard above, barn and sheds behind.

Inside

The 1,864 square feet inside have been updated without flattening the bones. Vaulted ceilings open the upper rooms, floors run hardwood and tile, and a wood stove holds down the living room. The kitchen carries an island, a built-in gas oven, and a wine cooler, with a formal dining room alongside.

The house is currently drawn as one main bedroom with a walk-in dressing room and a pair of private offices, a plan that can return to two bedrooms or more. A screened porch, a deck, and a front porch take the seasons in turn, and a detached two-car garage with a carport sits off the house, with tankless hot water and high-speed internet already in.

The Land

The 124.72 acres are the argument: a private pond, trails through the woods, a garden, and open land in the Taconic foothills along the Vermont line. Cambridge is ten minutes west, where Hubbard Hall, the opera house local businessman Martin Hubbard opened in 1878, still runs as Washington County's last. North Bennington, Vermont is fifteen minutes east, and the Bennington Museum, holder of the largest public collection of Grandma Moses, sits just beyond; she settled her Mount Nebo farm at Eagle Bridge, on this town's western edge, in 1905. The chestnuts never came back, but the name held.
