49 Downing Street
Price upon requestPhotography: Sotheby's International Realty (2013 listing)
49 Downing Street began in 1896 as a stable and a one family house, built for a truckman named John F. Caragher. The architects were Werner and Windolph, working in the Romanesque Revival manner that runs through a lot of the South Village. It stayed a working building for most of a century before it was converted to residential use in 1987.

Yoko Ono bought the house in 1995 for Sean Lennon. He lived there for the first few years, then moved on, and the house sat mostly empty after that. Ono herself never lived there; she has stayed at the Dakota since her years with John Lennon.

The condo went on the market in July 2013, came off during a co-op board dispute, relisted that November at $6.5 million, and sold in April 2014 for $8.3 million. Five thousand seven hundred square feet, three bedrooms, three baths, a private terrace, a greenhouse, a library, wood burning fireplaces in the primary bedroom and the living room, windows on all four exposures.
