490 Classon Avenue
The house sits inside the Clinton Hill Historic District, a stretch of Brooklyn the city protected for its run of Italianate and Renaissance Revival rowhouses built as the western slope filled in through the second half of the 19th century. Nearly 24 feet wide on a 100-foot lot with three exposures, it was restored a generation ago with new mechanicals and a reinforced structure while keeping the details worth keeping: two marble-mantel fireplaces, crown molding, tin ceilings and ceiling medallions.
A legal two-family with a garden and a terrace, it carries the light and the proportions that drew merchants and professionals up the hill in the first place.
