51 Hutchin Hill Road

Hutchin Hill Road is a no-through road in the hamlet of Bearsville, about ten minutes from the center of Woodstock, and Sawkill Creek runs just across it. The house stands on 5.01 wooded acres of moss-covered boulders and rock outcroppings, with stone pathways that lead through hidden clearings and up the ridge.

The farmhouse is clad in grey clapboard with white trim, and its door opens onto a flagstone terrace. Tiered bluestone patios step up the slope behind it, with hand-laid stone walls, a screened gazebo, apple and pear trees and established gardens. In autumn the ferns along the upper wall turn gold.

Inside, wide-plank yellow pine runs through the rooms, and the windows look straight out into the trees. Upstairs, the primary bedroom opens to a private balcony with exterior stairs down to the grounds. The listing places a tiny writing cabin once used by the historian Alf Evers on the trail up the ridge.
