57 East 74th Street

Built in 1898 to the designs of architects Buchman & Deisler, the limestone house is one of a row of eight the firm raised on this block between Madison and Park. Roughly 8,200 square feet rise across five floors, behind a facade that has held its line for more than a century.

The house later passed through Hollywood hands, owned at one point by Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline. A quiet footnote next door: Eleanor Roosevelt spent her final years at number 55, from 1959 to 1962.
