County records date this brick and stone Colonial to about 1775, which makes the house older than its own town: Gardiner was not carved out of New Paltz until 1853, so the house had stood some seventy-five years before the town it now anchors existed — which is also why it keeps a New Paltz mailing address today.

This is Huguenot stone-house country — New Paltz was settled by Huguenot refugees on the Wallkill in 1678 — and the house follows the classic Ulster County pattern: an early stone dwelling absorbed into a later brick Colonial, the two eras still legible side by side.

Centuries of craftsmanship remain intact inside: wide plank floors worn smooth, hand-hewn beams, original millwork, deep-set windows, Dutch doors, built-ins, and multiple fireplaces. The oldest stone wing centers on an extraordinary hearth kitchen, its exposed masonry, dark timber beams, and original fireplace evoking another era entirely.

The land runs to 39 acres of field and ridgeline views beneath the Shawangunks, about eighty miles north of the city.
