The Story

Fort Greene Place opened under another name. On mid-nineteenth-century maps this was Canton Street, and in 1859 its residents petitioned for an act renaming the stretch between Atlantic and DeKalb, determined to keep the name of the Revolutionary fort alive after the fort site itself became Washington Park. A contemporary account called the result "a very elegant and well located street." No. 66 belongs to the row that made their case, a 22-foot Italianate brownstone that its 2022 sale dated to circa 1853, its parlor still carrying the arched white-marble mantel and plaster ceiling centerpiece of that first decade.

The house was restored as a legal two-family before trading in May 2022, and the renovation kept the argument intact: original moldings and mirrors upstairs, new mechanicals underneath. The upper triplex is now offered directly by its owner.

Inside

The rental is the house above the garden level, three floors and 2,800 square feet reached by the stoop. The parlor runs beneath restored plaster cornices and a ceiling medallion, with two decorative fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, working wooden shutters, and hardwood floors. The kitchen pairs a built-in Miele refrigerator, freezer, and oven with a Blomberg gas range, its island seating three beside the dining room.

Four bedrooms take the upper floors. The rear second-floor bedroom opens to its own terrace above the garden, and a Jack-and-Jill bath with a deep soaking tub and marble finishes sits between the rear pair. Central air, a washer and dryer, and three outdoor spaces in all: garden, terrace, roof deck. Available August 1.

The Neighborhood

The block reads like a syllabus of Brooklyn building. Across the street, Brooklyn Technical High School, Walter C. Martin's Collegiate Gothic tower of 1930 to 1933, fills the blockfront to Fulton Street, and a few doors north at No. 22 sits the street's lone modernist house, built in 2002 by Christoff:Finio for the metal artist Darcy Miro.

The G train at Fulton Street is under 500 feet from the stoop, the BAM Harvey Theater a couple of blocks west on Fulton, Herts and Tallant's 1908 Peter Jay Sharp Building a short walk down Lafayette, and Atlantic Terminal a few minutes beyond that. Fort Greene Park, laid out by Olmsted and Vaux as Washington Park, is a few blocks north.
