67 Baker Road

The Rochester Patent was granted in 1703, and farming was the first economy of the town it named. Its hamlets changed their names as the traffic changed: Middleport became Kerhonkson, Port Jackson became Accord, and the Delaware and Hudson Canal, dug between 1825 and 1828, turned a subsistence valley into a commercial one. What survives of all that on the ground is the thing you walk past without reading: fieldstone, stacked into walls, marking edges that mattered to somebody.

Baker Road runs northwest out of that valley and stops. The neighbours on the county roll are still large and still agricultural, one of them a farmhouse of 1860 sitting on ninety-seven acres. Number 67 is 7.5 acres near the end of the road, with meadow, mature trees and those old walls already on it, and the Catskills standing up behind everything.

On last year's assessment roll, 67 Baker Road carried no year built at all. The county had it as rural vacant land, class 322, nineteen-odd acres of nothing in particular. The house is that new. The roll still carries 19.3 acres against the 7.5 acres on offer, which reads as a parcel split the roll predates, and the owner of record is Hemlock Ventures LLC, so the name on the listing belongs to the developing entity as much as to the trees behind the house.

That is worth knowing, because a new house in this valley usually announces itself. This one is quieter about it. It is sided in the deep brown the listing names, a colour chosen to settle into the treeline rather than stand off it, with dark sash and heavy exposed timber carrying the porch roofs. From the air it sits in mown meadow with the ridge standing up behind it.

The great room goes up two full storeys and gives most of one wall to glass. Beneath the windows a built-in bench runs the length of the room, with a tiled niche at one end stacked with split firewood and a wood stove set on a long black-tiled hearth. A mezzanine library looks down from above, shelved and skylit under a shiplap ceiling, and a woven pendant hangs into the volume to keep it from feeling like a barn.

The kitchen is soapstone, custom cabinetry and a substantial island with stools, a separate beverage area so guests can pour without crossing the cook, and a dining table turned toward the mountains. The hall bath puts a freestanding tub and a walk-in shower into one glazed wet area, which is the sort of move a builder makes on a house meant to be liked.

There are three covered outdoor spaces. The front porch runs the full width of the house under an exposed timber gable. A large vaulted screened porch takes a long table and holds the season open well into the fall. A third porch sits off the kitchen for the first coffee of the day, looking at meadow and mountain.

Beyond them: native plantings, a mown path cut through the goldenrod, open field and the evergreens behind the house. Electric has already been run to a planned pool location. A few miles north the Vernooy Kill drops about sixty feet in steps past the stone shell of a grist mill that ground this valley's grain until 1809, and southeast the Shawangunk Ridge and Minnewaska take over. Westwind Orchard, Arrowood Farms, Accord Social and Inness, the 225-acre club named for the nineteenth-century landscape painter George Inness, are all within the short drive that makes this part of the Hudson Valley what it currently is.
