67 Vestry Street, Townhouse North
Vestry Street ends at the Hudson, and the stone warehouse holding its corner has been there since 1896. The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, the A&P, built it as its first large purpose-built warehouse, a Romanesque Revival block by Frederick P. Dinkelberg, the architect who would go on to draw the Flatiron Building for Daniel Burnham a few years later. Tea and coffee moved through its two-story arched loading bays to serve the Washington Market; of that entire riverfront market world, this is the only A&P building left standing.
When the market closed, the artists came. From the late 1960s the building filled with lofts: Andy Warhol kept a studio on the second floor, the sculptors Marisol and John Chamberlain and the director Robert Wilson lived and worked here, Wim Wenders filmed scenes of The American Friend in it, and the building's circle helped seed what became the Dia Art Foundation. Preservationists fought to landmark it in 2014 and lost, which is why four new glass floors now rise quietly above the original cornice.
The current building is a 2024 conversion by BP Architects with interiors by Gachot Studios, done for Iliad Realty Group, which bought it from Aby Rosen. Thirteen full- and half-floor residences sit behind the restored facade, over a 50-foot lap pool in a double-height wood-paneled room.
Townhouse North is the duplex at the building's base, 3,678 square feet planned around a double-height great room where the original two-story arched windows run floor to ceiling behind sheer linen. A fluted white-oak column anchors the room; the stair climbs an art wall to the second floor. Four bedrooms plus a den, three full and two half baths.
The kitchen carries brushed-oak millwork, slab stone counters, a custom French LaCanche range, and Miele appliances. The primary suite is pure Gachot: a plaster-walled bedroom under its own arched windows and a book-matched marble bath with a six-foot soaking tub set into the arch. Off the fourth bedroom, which doubles as a library with a wet bar, a 667-square-foot south-facing terrace looks toward the Hudson.
Residents share the lap pool, a gym, sauna and steam rooms, and a full-time doorman. Hudson River Park is across West Street, and Robert A.M. Stern's 70 Vestry, the neighborhood's marquee new build, faces the old warehouse from across the street.
