The Story

The Narragansett tax roll carries the house as Plat D, lot 263: a one-family cottage on 7,405 square feet of Congdon Street, in the village the town still calls Narragansett Pier. The assessor dates it to 1940. That puts it two summers after the hurricane of September 21, 1938, which killed 312 people in Rhode Island and took the Dunes Club’s clubhouse off the beach a mile north, and one year after the town meeting of March 24, 1939, which voted unanimously to buy the privately held beachfront and run it as a town beach.

The Pier’s first century had belonged to the hotels: ten of them went up between 1866 and 1871, the Narragansett Pier Railroad arrived in 1876, and McKim, Mead and White’s casino, finished in 1886 on grounds laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, made the village one of the places in America to be seen, until the fire of September 12, 1900 left only its granite Towers. The nineteen hotels of 1899 did not survive the automobile and the Depression. What replaced them was a town, and cottages like this one, half a mile inland from the Towers.

The House

One and a half stories under a side gable, with a recessed corner porch behind a half wall, two skylights in the front slope of the roof, and a small utility ell at the back for the boiler. The present owner’s renovation kept that plan and remade its fabric. The kitchen runs along the back wall as a galley: book-matched honed Italian marble on the counters and up the wall to a marble shelf, flat cabinet fronts on aged-brass knobs, European appliances, and the pantry, dishwasher, washer and dryer hidden behind matching doors. Whitewashed plank floors run through the living room, 11 feet 6 by 13 feet 10 on the September 2026 plan, the dining room, which opens to a composite deck, and the first-floor bedroom. The bath is honed marble underfoot with a glazed-tile walk-in shower and a floating vanity. Upstairs is one room, 23 feet 5 inches long under the roof, with the two skylights, a desk and a closet. Listed on the State-Wide MLS on September 4, 2026, and offered furnished.
