The parcel is 165.14-2-6 in Columbia County: 1,885 square feet above grade, two stories, one wood-burning fireplace, built in 1939. The lot runs 0.14 of an acre and it ends at the water, with a private dock at the end of it.

SW Colony Road follows the shoreline on that side of the lake. The road name is older than the house. Nothing in the accessible record explains the Colony, and this page will not invent one for it.

New York's fisheries survey puts Copake Lake at 410 acres, a mile and a quarter long, with 5.2 miles of shoreline at an elevation of 715 feet. It is 34 feet deep at the deepest point and 16 feet on average.

It is a warmwater lake. The survey records largemouth and smallmouth bass running over fifteen inches, along with walleye, yellow perch, white perch, black crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed and rock bass. Two marinas work the shoreline through the season, and the lake takes motorboats.

The Mohicans called the water Achkookpeck, snake pond, and it is one of the few Mohican place names in this town that made it into the written record at all. The town of Copake was organized in 1824.

The golf course on the far shore was built in 1921 and opened in 1922, to a layout credited to Devereux Emmet, who also drew Garden City Golf Club and the Blue Course at Congressional. By the time this house went up in 1939, the lake had been a summer address for the better part of two decades.

Reclaimed timber beams cross the main room and the ceiling carries up to the ridge behind them. A fieldstone chimney runs the full height of that wall and holds a wood-burning firebox at the bottom of it.

The kitchen island is topped in concrete and stands open to the living and dining ends, so the cook is in the room. A lofted upper level looks down over the whole of it. Wood floors throughout. Three bedrooms, three baths, 1,885 square feet.

Outside, a deck sits on the water side under mature trees, with the dock off it. A separate gym building stands detached at the back of the lot. Parking is off street.
