The hamlet the painters kept
Springs was settled in the seventeenth century as a farming and fishing hamlet, its longtime families, the Bonackers, named for Accabonac Harbor, where they worked the water as baymen. In November 1945 Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner bought a farmhouse on Springs Fireplace Road, financed in part by Peggy Guggenheim, and became the first artists to live in the hamlet year-round; Willem de Kooning followed, and their house is now a National Historic Landmark. Woodbine Drive sits in the quiet grid of lanes near Three Mile Harbor, a short drive from East Hampton Village.
The house
A furnished three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house of about 1,800 square feet on 0.86 landscaped acres. The exterior keeps its weathered wood; inside, ceilings vault to painted beams, the floors run whitewashed plank, and a painted-brick chimney rises through the middle of the house, holding the living room fireplace with a family room and a wall of built-in shelving beyond. The kitchen sits under a natural wood plank ceiling, and the upstairs bedrooms tuck under dormers and skylights. Sliders open to a deck and a lawn ringed by mature trees, with more than one place to eat outside.
