Casa Manire

Casa Manire stands outside Puerto Maldonado, the river city in Madre de Dios where the Peruvian Amazon begins in earnest. The land belonged to Yerko Zlatar's grandparents, who worked it as a farm. The jungle has taken back a good deal of it since, but not all of it: stone ruins are still standing, and plantations of banana, cacao and tea are still producing. Zlatar is the creative director of Puna Estudio, which designed the house with the Lima architect Martin Dulanto and completed it in 2023. Both names belong on it. The booking page credits the studio alone, which is how a house built on one architect's inherited ground ends up reading like a hotel brand.

The river gives the house its name. Casa Manire faces the Manire, and the water is audible from the side of the house that opens onto it, which is nearly all of it.

The references the architects name are the Eameses' Case Study Houses and the Japanese forest cabin, and the plan reads as both at once: a single bar of 2,917 square feet, lifted clear of the forest floor on slim posts so the ground and its water pass underneath. The roof does the arguing. It sits low over the closed side, lifts toward the river, and where it crosses the terrace it cantilevers the full width of the front with nothing carrying it along that edge. No post, no column, no mullion standing in the view. That one decision is what separates this from every jungle lodge with a good deck.

The rest is timber, inside and out. Vertical boards on the walls, plank floors, a ribbed roof carried on exposed rafters, all of it dark enough that the green outside does the colour work. Where the timber stops, steel framed glass runs floor to ridge, so the river wall is effectively a drawing of the forest. The kitchen is one long island with stools pulled up to it and woven shades hung low. A corridor of vertical boards runs the length of the closed side and ends at a door with the jungle behind it.

It is not for sale. Casa Manire is booked by the night through Caoba Hotels: two bedrooms, six guests, three nights minimum. No rate is published, so the calendar quotes it.
