Borgo di Carpiano, Localita Carpiano

The hamlet stands in the hills near Gubbio, in Umbria, on about twelve hectares of olive grove and woodland with a stream running through. A terrace below the stone buildings holds an infinity pool that looks over the wooded valley. The main room is the former church, where 18th-century frescoes cover the walls.

A lane of cut stone runs between the buildings, under vines and past white hydrangeas, and the woods begin at the last wall. Gubbio is twelve kilometres away by the borgo's own account, and Perugia airport twenty. The ground between is olive trees and oak.

The pool is the last thing on the walk down. The water ends at an edge, and past it the valley runs out in ridges of forest.
