69 Horatio Street

Horatio Street runs four blocks from Eighth Avenue to the river, and the houses on it are small, most of them three or four stories with a handful of apartments each. This is a floor of 69 Horatio Street, a house of three storeys and four apartments.

What the apartment has is the thing those houses have: rooms that were laid out before open plans, with proportions and a moulded cornice and a chimney breast, and windows that sit deep in the wall.

It is painted coral. Not an accent wall, not a feature: the walls, the trim, the mouldings, the reveals around the sash windows, all of it in one flat warm pink that changes completely depending on which hour the sun is coming in. Against it, the black marble mantel and the mustard velvet sofa stop being furniture and start being composition.

The kitchen is a compact galley lacquered in deep green, set at the back. A run of closets is faced in cork. The bedroom is white and plain by comparison, one bed under a window with a tree in it, which is probably the right decision after the front room.

Rove Travel manages the apartment and holds the calendar. Thirty nights minimum, renters insurance required, no pets, weekly cleaning with linen changes. There is no laundry in the unit.
