The Story

Top floors of old Village houses are usually the compromise: lower ceilings, the eaves cutting in, the stairs to get there. The fix, when somebody bothers, is to open the roof. Here a skylight runs the length of the main room, and the apartment stops being a top floor and becomes the best floor.

The house is 69 Horatio Street, and the apartment takes the top two floors of it.

Inside

The main room is white and tall, with a white mantel at one end and a long dining table under the skylight. Green upholstered benches, a graphic black-and-white panel on the wall, a film poster in Italian, and plants that have clearly been in this light a long time.

The kitchen sits behind an open stair. Upstairs, under the pitch, there is a bed against painted brick with the roof coming down to meet it, and a second bedroom in pink at the front of the house.
