Ohayo Mountain House, Woodstock
Ohayo Mountain Road climbs out of Woodstock village and runs toward the Ashokan Reservoir, and the houses along it were built for people who wanted the town close but not audible. The Ohayo Mountain House arrived in 1931, a trim white mountain house of the kind the Catskills produced between the wars, and it has kept its silhouette: the original stone chimney rising through the roofline, a deep front porch pointed at the sunset, and 8.3 acres of meadow, stone walls, and walking paths around it.

Inside, the renovation reads as restraint. Banks of original windows pull the woods into every room, wide plank floors run beneath exposed beams, and the circa 1930s stone fireplace anchors the sitting room with a woodstove set into its firebox. The kitchen keeps the house’s scale, the baths are tiled in terracotta, and on the garden floor an office and family room are wrapped in the mountain’s own stonework.

The grounds carry the one addition the era could not have imagined: a new gunite pool with a bluestone lounge and its own poolhouse, set against the wildflower meadow. The mountain’s history runs deep even by Woodstock standards. Walter Weyl, a founding editor of The New Republic, kept an Arts and Crafts house high on this road in the 1910s, and in 1969 Bob Dylan moved into that same house to escape the fans who had found him at Byrdcliffe. The village is minutes away. It never feels like it.
