Between Dalston and London Fields
The bedroom window looks into the conifers in the front garden and across Queensbridge Road, and the living room and kitchen look the other way, over the back garden to the chimney stacks of the next terrace. The flat is the first floor of a Grade II-listed stock-brick house at the Dalston end of the road, between Dalston, Haggerston and London Fields, with its own front door at the street.
The east side of this stretch has been a conservation area since 1985, mid-Victorian terraces and villas from Dalston Lane down to Brownlow Road; the Hackney Society's walk describes the road as laid in the 1840s to serve the Middleton estate, connecting Dalston Lane with Hackney Road. Dalston Junction and Hackney Downs stations are a short walk, and the listing puts Liverpool Street at about eighteen minutes from Hackney Downs. Ridley Road Market has traded on Ridley Road since the end of the 1880s, from about twenty stalls then to more than 150 now, Monday to Saturday.
The garden is reached down the side of the house: a decked patio under a trellis of ivy, bamboo along the white-painted wall, an olive and a fig, a gravel path, a water butt and a shed at the end. In October the olive is still silver and the ivy on the trellis is still green.
