It was their studio first
Barn Studio was built as a working studio, the room JaegerSloan made for their own practice on the land off Via Pioli Road outside Kerhonkson. Everything that makes it good to stay in was first a decision about working in it: the volume, the light, the eight foot whiteboard, the desk set under the window on the upper level. It is open to guests now, by the night.
A barn on Via Pioli
From the road it is a barn and nothing else, in the stretch of the Catskills between the Shawangunk ridge and the Rondout. The entry is around the back, which is the first of its jokes.
The volume
Inside, the building gives up its whole section at once: two storeys of open room under the roof, a glass garage door filling one wall, and a field beyond it that the deer cross at dusk. It is the most voluminous of the Reset Club houses, and the plan spends that volume on one room rather than several, which is what makes it work for a group.
Made for staying in
An eighteen-foot projection screen faces the sofa. There is a record player, a Roland digital piano downstairs beside a cabinet of childrens books, a Fender guitar, an arcade table with four hundred games, and a disco ball on voice command. The kitchen opens to the room across a peninsula, with an operable window over the field and a coffee station at one end.
Sleeping and outside
The upper level holds a king bed behind curtains that close it off from the room below, with the desk, a walk-in closet and the full bath. A second bedroom sits downstairs with a double. Outdoors there is a lounge around a vintage Preway fireplace, a second screen, and a couch pointed at the sky.
